Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) Remediation

Delivering safe, compliant and cost effective RAAC and structural repairs

Cutting through the implications surrounding uncontrolled collapse of RAAC, Abbeycom ‘Constructive Solutions’, working with our trusted Structural Engineering design partners, have innovated a unique, lightweight strengthening and bracing system where removal of defective RAAC panels isn’t necessarily required and may remain in place. Our innovative modern method for treatment of RAAC offers a lower-cost alternative to RAAC eradication, while protecting against uncontrolled collapse, which is particularly relevant to healthcare and facilities that need to remain in-use throughout the duration of works. With recent experience of high-profile RAAC remediation for both horizontal and vertical applications, Abbeycom ‘Constructive Solutions’ are at the cutting-edge of RAAC remediation and have the knowledge, skills and experience to deliver RAAC projects of all sizes.

What Is Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC)?

Understanding the material behind the headlines

RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) is concrete panel system often used in the construction of public and industrial buildings between 1950s and 1990s. As a pre-fabricated system, the production method involved aerating concrete panels (similar to the texture of an Aero chocolate bar), offering significant cost savings at the time of installation. As the RAAC panels have reached the end of their building life expectancy, there have been cases of uncontrolled collapse. Asbestos was the building cancer, now it’s RAAC.

When & Where RAAC Was Used?

1950s

RAAC introduced in the UK as a lightweight, cost-effective alternative to traditional concrete.

1960/70s

RAAC becomes a prevalent method of construction in hospitals, schools and industrial units.

1980s

Continued use in flat roof and floor panels, especially in low-rise educational buildings.

1990s

Growing concerns from engineers; RAAC usage declines. Last known UK installations around mid-90s.

1999

Government-backed reports begin flagging structural risks and deterioration in ageing RAAC.

2020s

RAAC crisis enters public spotlight. UK government mandates urgent building reviews and remediation.

Our RAAC Solutions

Precision-led RAAC repairs or removal backed by innovation, experience and compliance

At Abbeycom, we don’t just repair RAAC, we redefine how it’s done.

Our lightweight RAAC strengthening remediation method avoids full removal of existing RAAC panels and eliminates any chances of uncontrolled collapse. Whether horizontal (roof or floor) or vertical (wall) applications, remediation offers a lower-cost alternative to RAAC eradication, which involves full panel removal, replacement of structural elements and invasive disruption to buildings

No visible ceiling damage post-installation as our innovative systems seamlessly blends with the original internal finishes

Designed for lightweight strength, speed of installation and minimal operational impact, especially critical in schools, hospitals, and in-use high-traffic public and private buildings

Zero panel removal, no large-scale replacement of structural elements and business-as-usual operations may remain in place

Constructed to compliant safety standards

Our RAAC system is already being used to safely extend the lifespan of buildings across the UK, delivering long-term protection and safety, peace of mind, and cost-efficiency.
